WHISTLE was an international collaborative project focused on preventing verbal sexual harassment and catcalling in sport.
The project brought together organizations from five countries. It examined how harassment affected women’s safety, confidence and participation in organized sport and outdoor physical activities.
Women shared their experiences and participated in pilot empowerment programmes. Sport practitioners, coaches, managers, women’s organizations and local authorities learned how to recognize harassment, respond to incidents and provide suitable support. The project also used awareness campaigns to reach athletes, fans, professionals and the wider public.
The project established WHISTLE Advice Systems in more than 30 sports clubs. These systems provided practical support for women affected by verbal sexual harassment and helped sports organizations create safer and more equal environments.
Increase awareness and understanding of verbal sexual harassment and catcalling in sport.
Provide sports clubs and community stakeholders with practical tools to identify harassment and support affected women.
Establish long-term support systems that improve women’s safety, confidence and equal participation in sport.
